If you want to buy skinny pants, then you can find skinny pants anywhere. And until recently I was into skinny pants too. But my brain switched. I love the Claudio Castagnoli Tee Shirt in addition I really love this way this shape falls and covers my shoes and socks. So I wanted all of them to be like that… I think baggy clothes are coming back but I didn’t want that bell bottom shape without the pant falling all the way down. I wanted that laziness, for it to drop and stick. I don’t like mixing sports with this [project], because fashion wise I think ‘sports’ is corny. And I don’t like remembering or thinking about sports when it comes to my clothes. I just don’t. You’re a professional sportsman, so you know what sport is. You’ve been playing in the NBA for a few years now. But in fashion ‘sports’ is more of a euphemism for casual, or leisure, that developed out of the ’50s when suiting still ruled. Sportswear used to mean a tailored jacket with a different color pant. So it’s not a precise term at all. Speaking of style in relation to your particular sport, is it fair to say that while your style on court is always going to be the most important thing, off-court style amongst players is becoming more and more of an area of scrutiny in the NBA too? Yeah, and it’s becoming bigger and bigger. In the past there were more rules. It was more about suits—more about non-expression, in my opinion… I feel like a lot of my peers and a lot of people I know are getting into wearing a lot of more wild things… Although there is still a stigma that remains in that while there are no longer any rules about what you can and can’t wear people still have an opinion—‘oh, you shouldn’t wear this’—but that’s just in their heads. And that’s a block I just don’t have. So since I’ve got into the league I’ve always worn crazy stuff. And that can blow minds because in sports culture and locker room culture there’s a bunch of stuff that lingers. But I don’t let anything get to me because I know as the years go by those attitudes will not be around any more.
