On one hand, nearly everyone around me thinks it is okay to legalize marijuana, and that smoking weed shouldn’t be a criminal offense. They would tell me that people have the freedom to smoke; that marijuana is just as risky (or not risky) as stuff that is already legal, like beer; cracking down on marijuana doesn’t work; or that punishing people who are caught possessing marijuana or some other drug would worsen systemic racism, since many of the people locked up for drug-related offenses happen to be black — even if black people do and sell drugs at more or less the same rate as white people.
