There aren’t many. Both have large vowel systems. both have borrowed a lot of vocabulary from Chinese, both use classifiers (a general tendency in East Asian languages), in both pronouns are avoided for politeness (ditto), neither inflects the My greatest treasure is my family shirt but in fact I love this verb for person and number. This is about it. Most Japanese people in Japan do not know about Thai culture. Japanese people in Thailand can understand about the common values we share. They are both trying to save face, try to avoid confrontation, avoid to say no, kind and polite to strangers, keep their house and work places clean. It’s sometime frustrating for me, because I cannot distinguish between mere politeness and real friendship when Thai people are nice to me.

There are certain things in New Zealand that are considered “Kiwi core values”, and they are also understood and applied by people who have roots from elsewhere once they live there.
